The Love in a Mist quilt block is an easy block for beginners with only half square triangles, square in a square and square patches. This traditional style block was originally done with only a light and a dark (or medium) colored fabric. I had to do my own thing so I added in another color. Additionally, the center star could be a fourth color. Let’s get started!

Fabric Requirements for a 12″ Finished Love in a Mist Quilt Block:
- Light/Gold: 1 – 4.5″ square, 4 – 3″ squares, and 20 – 2.5″ squares
- Medium/Orange: 4 – 3″ squares, and 4 – 2.5″ squares
- Dark/Black: 4 – 4.5″ squares

Sewing Directions:
Half Square Triangle Units:
Step 1:
Using the four Light/Gold 3″ squares and the four Medium/Orange 3″ squares sew together eight Half Square Triangle (HST) units as shown in the picture below. Trim/square up the HSTs to 2.5″ square. You can find my tutorial for sewing a basic HST at https://quiltembroiderypdf.com/how-to-sew-a-basic-half-square-triangle-block

Square in a Square Units:
Step 2:
Next you sew the Square in a Square units by using 16 Light/Gold 2.5″ squares and the four Dark/Black 4.5″ squares as shown below. You will find the tutorial for sewing together a basic Square in a Square block at https://quiltembroiderypdf.com/how-to-sew-a-basic-square-in-a-square-block

Corner Units:
Step 3:
Lay out two Step 1 Half Square Triangle units, a Light/Gold 2.5″ square, and a Medium/Orange 2.5″ square as shown in the picture below.

Step 4:
Now you can sew the patches together like a Four Patch block by sewing them into two rows. Then press the seam allowances away from the Half Square Triangle units as shown below.

Step 5:
Now sew the two rows together and press the seam allowances. You can see in the picture below that I’ve use the tweak/twirl/furl method for pressing but you can press however you like. Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for a total of four Corner units.

Putting It All Together:
Step 6:
Lay out the Corner units, the Square in a Square units, and the Light/Gold 4.5″ square as shown below.

Step 7:
From here the Love in a Mist quilt block goes together like a typical Nine Patch block. Sew the units together into three rows as shown in the picture below.

Step 8:
Press the seam allowances away from the Square in a Square units as shown below.

Step 9:
Sew the three rows together.

Step 10:
Press the seam allowances toward the center of the block as shown in the picture below. You’re done!
