Love in a Mist Quilt Block Tutorial

The Love in a Mist quilt block is an easy block for beginners with only half square triangles, square in a square and square patches. This traditional style block was originally done with only a light and a dark (or medium) colored fabric. I had to do my own thing so I added in another color. Additionally, the center star could be a fourth color. Let’s get started!

I recently discovered that “Love in a Mist” is the name of a really pretty little flower.

Fabric Requirements for a 12″ Finished Love in a Mist Quilt Block:

    • Light/Gold: 1 – 4.5″ square, 4 – 3″ squares, and 20 – 2.5″ squares
    • Medium/Orange: 4 – 3″ squares, and 4 – 2.5″ squares
    • Dark/Black: 4 – 4.5″ squares

    Sewing Directions:

    Half Square Triangle Units:

    Step 1:

Using the four Light/Gold 3″ squares and the four Medium/Orange 3″ squares sew together eight Half Square Triangle (HST) units as shown in the picture below. Trim/square up the HSTs to 2.5″ square. You can find my tutorial for sewing a basic HST at https://quiltembroiderypdf.com/how-to-sew-a-basic-half-square-triangle-block

    Step 4:

Now you can sew the patches together like a Four Patch block by sewing them into two rows. Then press the seam allowances away from the Half Square Triangle units as shown below.

    Step 5:

Now sew the two rows together and press the seam allowances. You can see in the picture below that I’ve use the tweak/twirl/furl method for pressing but you can press however you like. Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for a total of four Corner units.

    Layout Ideas:

This example is a basic 4 x 4 layout with similar colors to the tutorial. I love the secondary design that appears!

This version of the basic 4 x 4 layout includes sashing and cornerstones.

    quilt 2
This layout uses a large three-color Hourglass block as an alternating block. This creates another large star in the quilt.

    quilt 3
This is an example of an on-point layout with the block extending into the setting triangles.

And this on-point layout uses the large three-color Hourglass block to create another large star in the quilt.

And this on-point example has narrow sashing and cornerstones and plain background fabric for the setting triangles.
