Occasionally a quilting pattern will pop into your mind that you can’t get out of. The same thing occurred when I first checked out the Evergrowing Mandala Quilt, a free pattern from AGF Studio (Art Gallery Fabrics) that was superbly designed. This pattern is a must-have if you’re a fan of geometric designs and modernity.
This quilt is so interesting because it brings about a fascinating “twitch” or rotation effect through rather simple techniques. The design is very dependent on HSTs (Half Square Triangles) at its very core. These blocks are created in a way that allows them to radiate outwards from the centre, using the contrast and colour placement of fabric to create this effect, similar to the intricate layered look of a traditional mandala.
Project is completed at a handsome size of 88″ x 88″, which is ideal for a queen-sized bed or a stunning wall hanging.
The original design beautifully showcases the Trouvaille fabric collection, combining soft floral prints with striking, modern solids such as icy blue, aquarium teal and deep very berry pink. The high contrasting colors make each interlocking star shape stand out in a clear manner from the crisp white linen background.
Don’t let the intricate final look intimidate you. The pattern decomposes the construction in a logical way by dividing the layout in four symmetrical blocks of the quadrants. Then you make 11 different rows for each block, turn them over, and sew them together. An interesting project that will keep your chain-piecing nicely contained and your mind very focused!
Serene in its original colors or a vibrant with custom colors from your scrap bins, the Evergrowing Mandala is a fun, creative study in shape and symmetry. Pick up your rotary cutter, set your quarter inch seam allowance and prepare to enjoy this beautiful mandala growing on your cutting table!
